The case for hiring weirdos
Everybody loves a good underdog story...


We’re working on solving some of the hardest problems in the world.
We have great internal processes and support structures that make our projects go better, but no amount of process will magic these results into being.
Our secret sauce is our people.
And the truth is that not many people in the world are cut out for this type of work. 🙅♂️
So how do we hire them?
We filter for only the qualities we care about and not on other random things that don’t affect whether or not they can do their job.
This sounds obvious, but we see a lot of people optimizing for proxy measures rather than the actual things that matter.
Going to a fancy college might be correlated with being intelligent, but if you’re just recruiting from the Ivy League, you’re missing out on a lot of really smart people.
We’re not biased against guys like our Head of Data Science with his PhD in high energy particle physics from Caltech and Magna Cum Laude in Chemistry & Physics from Harvard. 🙄 He’s a smart dude and a phenomenal data scientist. These things are a good signal, but they’re not ultimately the thing we care about.
We look for people who:
Are experts in their area, but know that the learning never ends.
Care about results and are passionate about achieving them. They have extreme professional pride and high ownership.
They might be used to being the smartest person in the room, but they don’t prioritize their own ego over doing a good job. They can collaborate well with others.
They get shit done.
Ed meets this bill, but so does our architect who didn’t graduate high school because he started making millions on the side business he built or our developer who grew up in the Brazilian favelas.
We’re looking for unicorns. We’d never be able to find enough if we added additional, unnecessary requirements on top.
Too many brilliant, hardworking people get turned away in favor of fresh college grads with no job experience, but the right piece of paper or people who spent a few years at a FANG company trying not to break anything.
We don’t do that at AE Studio.
We look for exceptional, talented, good people who are excited to work hard with other amazing people to create things that are changing the world. That’s it. We don’t care about anything else.

What you did
As long as you do great work
Have a tough problem you’re looking to solve that you need a crack team for? (And don’t mind if it’s done by someone who was in an eating club or someone who has no idea what that is.)
